Summary/Abstract: The period of normalisation, 1969/1970–1989, was a pivotal moment for the Czechoslovak social sciences and humanities. It brought with it a long and painful isolation, in contrast to the 1960s when many disciplines had experienced something of a renaissance, emerging one by one – hesitantly at first, then more openly – from the oppressive confines of an historical materialism long proclaimed to be the only viable scholarly method.
