Summary/Abstract: From the sixth century, European pilgrims have visited Damascus and given an accurate description of the city, devoting a section in their writings to its walls. From the late fourteenth century until the beginning of the sixteenth century pilgrims became increasingly interested in the walls of Damascus and some of them such as Anselme Adorno, Martino Baumgartner, and Ludvico di Varthema wrote a story about the lily flower (fleur-de-lis) carved on them by a Florentine. The story became popular in Europe from the middle of the fifteenth century.
