Summary/Abstract: Among the most prominent travelers to visit Albania during the XIX century is the English officer and diplomat, explorer of antiquity and eminent albanologist – William Martin Leake. He came to Albania at the end of 1804, and in the beginning of 1805 he met Ali Pasha of Tepeleni. He collected information for the Pasha himself, his personality, way of thinking, policy and court. He used that information later on when he composed his dictionary. The research outlines Leake’s contribution in clarifying the ethnic structure of the region, and the language peculiarities of the separate group’s of population. The information that he gave in this respect for the Albanians, Greeks, Bulgarians, Jews and Turks is also studied and commented on. Outlined is his priority interest in studying the Walachians.
