Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the concise works devoted to the history of non-Hungarian ethnic groups of Hungary by two outstanding historians, Gyula Szekfű and István Szabó, in the early 1940s. The author argues that their frequently divergent approaches should basically be accounted for in terms of the authors’ different perspectives. Szekfű was a representative of intellectual history and historism, who treated the Hungarian people before all as a historical entity; his interpretation was dominated by the concept of political nation. István Szabó, on the other hand, was an adherent of people’s history as conceived in Hungary by Elemér Mályusz, which was based on the popular concept of nation.
