Summary/Abstract: In less than a century of existence, The Hobbit has changed considerably. At first a charming story told by a father to his children, it has become, thanks to its author, the first volume in a world of heroic fantasy, a pioneer of a literary genre. When film director Peter Jackson takes a hold of it in 2012, the story already differs greatly from the original, growing into a cinematic saga trying to equal the success of its “big sister”, movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings, also directed by Peter Jackson. But this pales in comparison to the changes that fanfiction authors will compose, with, to date, some 33.000 stories about The Hobbit, in only one fanfiction archive website. The fans bring with them their codes and language(s), and it is mostly through the Romance between Bilbo and Thorin that The Hobbit is perpetually reinvented, each author reinterpreting Tolkien’s novel.
