Summary/Abstract: The topic on the establishment and functioning of a liquid natural gas trading hub in the region of Southeastern Europe provokes serious attention in the past few years, especially in the period after the cancelation of the South Stream project and the emergence of other large-scale, high-capacity supply streams concepts such as Turkish Stream, Balkan Gas Hub, Eastring, VerticalGas corridor, etc. Beyond any doubt there is a pressing need a hub trading platform to be launched and operated in this part of Europe, covering and unifying the neighboring regional gas markets. However, in order the latter to be achieved there are certain preconditions to be met, ensuring the physical, software and internal market backbone of the future hub. The current report presents the various types of gas hubs in Europe, analyses the EU legislative and regulatory framework in respect to gas market functioning, reveals the preconditions for establishing a liquid natural gas trading hub and evaluates the prospects of establishing a regional hub for Southeastern Europe on the territory of Bulgaria.
