IDEOLOGICAL DISCOURSE IN D.H. LAWRENCE’S THE PRUSSIAN OFFICER FROM BAKHTINIAN PERSPECTIVE

Summary/Abstract: Discourse plays a fundamental role in the daily expression and reproduction of ideologies. This study therefore pays special attention to the ways ideologies influence the various levels of discourse structures, from intonation, syntax and images to the many aspects of meaning, such as, coherence, presuppositions, metaphors and argumentation, among many more. Bakhtin introduces a new epistemology or meditation on knowledge for understanding language. His theory of language argues that individuals produce language in specific social contexts and these social contexts determine meaning. Articulating his language theory within the context of philosophy and advances in sciences, for Bakhtin, every utterance has historical and social significance. No word, according to Bakhtin, stands alone or is independent but depends on how it will be received by others. In accordance with the dialogic concept of Bakhtin, Lawrence’s language in The Prussian Officer can be defined as dialogic.
