Summary/Abstract: This is a translation of the chapter “Arts of Noticing” from Anna Loewenhaupt Tsing’s The Mushrooms at the End of the World: The Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins. Princeton University Press, Princeton 2015, pp. 17-27. The paper talks about the need to go beyond the categories of progress; they dominate the thinking of history even in the case of the catastrophe narrative. For the study of undetermined and multi-directional history we need the art of noticing. It allows us to see the numerous time rhythms manifested in (human and non-human) assemblages that learn about themselves from the interruptions arising as a result of collisions between the lifeways of particular elements.
