Summary/Abstract: From the second half of the 1940s to the late 1970s Romanian economic policy was determined by the fundamental objective of accelerated industrialization. Although in the early 1980s economic growth came to a halt, the goals and means of development were reconsidered only partially and temporarily. At the beginning of the process some three quarters of those employed worked in agriculture. In the early 1950s this sector accounted for one quarter of exports in general and half of the exports to capitalist countries. The agrarian character of society survived longer in Romania than elsewhere in the East European region. Despite the clear-cut political objective of rapid industrialization, development was hindered by a number of factors in the early fifties. The most important of these were an underdeveloped infrastructure and educational system and the rather primitive state of development in manufacturing. [...]
