Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to show the death penalty as a special form of punishment functioning in international human rights documents. The first part of the article is devoted to the characteristics of punishment as such. Generalobjectives and punishment functions are shown. The second part presents types ofpenalties functioning in the Polish legal system. The last part of the article containsa brief overview of issues related to the functioning of the death penalty in basicdocuments regulating human rights.
