Summary/Abstract: The author points out the importance of the French Civil Code, the Napoleon Code, which was promulgated 200 years ago. In its simplicity and beauty, the founding text of the Code asserted the freedom and equality of all human beings, the secular nature of law, the rights of the person, the role of the family, property, the use of the contract, the principle of responsibility as well as respect of public order and good morals. The quality of its text and the rational and universal reasoning that it expresses placed the Napoleon Code amongst the primary sources of inspiration for foreign law-makers; sometimes this was done directly and some other times by means of another influence; sometimes simply from its letter and some other times from certain provisions, while other times, last but not least, from a methodical and laic approach to the finality of law.
