Summary/Abstract: International support for Central Asian countries has played a vital, but rarely analysed role in legitimacy-building mechanisms instituted by state authorities. This was because of the weakness of other mechanisms of legitimacy: procedural, legal, economic and traditional. The article attempts to raise the neglected issue of the international dimension of the legitimisation of an authoritarian regime. The paper examines the two areas where the international legitimacy of power took the most expressive forms, namely international security and the energetic and economic interests of the West. It aims to scrutinise the ways through which international actors provided legitimising arguments that were used by internal Central Asian actors to reproduce their authoritarian power. The empirical basis of the article consists of official documents, press releases and the recorded discourse of international political actors.
