Summary/Abstract: On 7 April 2004, the Romanian Institute for Human Rights organized at its headquarters, in collaboration with the Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs, the National Authority for Persons with Disabilities and the Romanian Association for the United Nations, a symposium devoted to the World Health Day, this year celebrated throughout the world under the logo “Road Safety Is No Accident!”. Opening the session, the Institute's Director, Prof. Dr. Irina Moroianu Zlătescu, showed that by choosing such a topic the world health forum wanted to sensitize the international community about the bad consequences of traffic accidents that cause the death of 1.2 million people every year, while almost 6 million people remain with handicaps for the rest of their lives, with serious repercussions both for themselves and for their families and society in general. The debates that followed, involving parliamentarians, physicians, magistrates, representatives of the central State institutions with powers in the field of health and road traffic, representatives of the local public administration, experts and representatives of NGOs taking interest in the field of human rights, pointed out the need to join the governmental efforts and those of the civil society and the industrial societies for the elaboration, development and implementation of road-safety research programmes meant to prevent accidents.
