Summary/Abstract: This is the seventh EEPS issue, the first in the journal's third year. The quality of the 35 articles published in the first two years confirms the opinion of the Joint Committee for Eastern Europe of the ACLS and SSRC, expressed in 1984, that there was need and ample room for a new scholarly journal in our field. East European studies contain a substantial number of first-rate scholars in the United States, in Europe, and increasingly elsewhere, too. Though there were and continue to be other journals which publish good materials about Eastern Europe, few are devoted entirely to our region, and none in the United States could act as a central, unifying publication for the field.
