Summary/Abstract: This is the first issue of East European Politics and Societies under its new editorship. The principal goal of the journal, however, remains unchanged: I am as determined as Daniel Chirot to establish EEPS as the central, unifying publication for all the disciplines in the East European field. This means that the politics and societies of the title will be interpreted in the broadest possible way. EEPS will favor no discipline or methodology. It will seek to publish the best scholarly work that contributes to the understanding of the region's myriad problems, both historical and contemporary. It will not confuse the problems of any particular social system with the larger issues that preoccupy the region. Nor will it insist on regional unity; for Eastern Europe is the most heterogeneous area of Europe. [...]
