Summary/Abstract: Purpose/Thesis: The aim of this paper is to review the history of identity fraud involving scientific journals and the state of scholarship on this phenomenon. The article presents cybercriminals’ methods of operation and the algorithms for detecting hijacked scientific periodicals. Approach/Methods: The account of identity fraud of scientific journals is based on a deep critical review of literature from the period 2014–2020. Scams involving Sylwan, Chemical and Process Engineering, Systems Science and Polish Polar Research were used as case studies. Results and Conclusions: Characteristics of the issue led to the conclusion that the identity theft of scientific journals is particularly threatening to the integrity of scientific communication, violating the principles of reliability of scientific publications and distorting the image of science. Originality/Value: The conducted critical review of literature gave a comprehensive picture of identity fraud of scientific journals. The study of the cases of Sylwan, Chemical and Process Engineering, Systems Science and Polish Polar Research provided insight into this cybercrime in Polish scientific publishing.
