Christo Pipkoff, Founder of the Pipkoffs Musical Dynasty. Historical and Genealogical Perspective (the 180th and 120th Anniversaries of his Birth and Death)

Summary/Abstract: Christo Pipkoff founded the Pipkoffs musical dynasty, and according to my research this is the earliest musicians’ family which has actively been involved in Bulgaria’s culture for two centuries now. He was the first significant professional clarinettist in this country and a prolific musician whose many talents were manifest in a dialectical unity across two representative fields of music – performing arts and composition. His grandson, Lubomir Pipkoff, wasan important figure in Bulgarian music and is presently a focal point of research. His son, Panayot Pipkoff, a man of multifaceted abilities and one of Bulgaria’s musical pioneers, failed to draw any special attention apart from a mere documentary and historical interest. We only have scanty information about his father Christo Pipkoff and no monograph on him at all. The new archival and other records provide grounds for entering his name in encyclopaedias and reference books as a clarinettist, teacher and kapellmeister, as well as a forefather of generations of musicians who have been building on his legacy.
