Summary/Abstract: During the interwar period Ilija Arnaudoff (1889 – 1946) established himself as an erudite and versatile Bulgarian intellectual. After graduating as an opera director in Vienna under the guidance of Hans Breuer, he returned to Bulgaria and brought a new impetus to the development of opera in his homeland in the 1930s and 1940s. This article examines a little-known archival document in which Ilija Arnaudoff formulates the basics of his own concept for the development of Bulgarian opera theatres outside the capital city as independent creative institutions. The tragic events in Bulgaria in the mid- 1940s did not allow for the realization of this concept.
