Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the earliest production of Ruse Opera House, Verdi’s La Traviata (8 November 1949), director: Prof. Dragan Kurdjiev, conductor/ director: Konstantin Iliev. The Opera House was officially inaugurated on 27 November 1949, seeking to build a genuinely European opera company, as categorically stated in the booklet issued for the premiere. In those years of total post-war communist propaganda, the authors of the articles contained within, skilfully hid between the lines their spiritual aspirations and hopes for achieving the highest possible artistic values. Cited are texts by Georgi Chendov (later, the first director of Ruse Opera House); director Dragan Kurdjiev; memories of opera diva Brilianta Kevorkian (who sang Violetta Valery), a study on the musical past of Ruse by local historian Dimiter Sakakushev, etc.
