Summary/Abstract: This study on musical life in the Danubian city of Ruse spans the period from 1820 to the end of the nineteenth century. The role of school activities, churches and other city institutions for cultivating the needs of Ruse society for collective music and theatre art events has been traced out. The contribution of teachers in the process of developing knowledge and skills (including musical ones conducive to creating favourable conditions for a rich musical life) has been rethought. A variety of activities of the earliest choir and the earliest singing society (formed in Ruse in 1870) have been dealt with. Highlighted and brought to the fore is the contribution of Ruse-based musicians to the development of Bulgarian musical culture, particularly in terms of building up a repertoire of musical productions and laying the foundations for establishing the Ruse People’s Opera House (presently, the Ruse State Opera House) in 1949.
