Summary/Abstract: In this specially prepared section of East European Politics and Societies, three of us take up the difficult, indeed almost impossible task of trying to understand the changes taking place in Hungary today and forecast the future. (All three articles obviously have implications for the whole of the region, but none of us is overreaching in our remarks). Our task is so challenging not simply because of the extraordinary rapidity of the changes in Hungary and Eastern Europe, but also because it is unprecedented.
