Summary/Abstract: In the context of institutional modernization in consonance with the domestic and the international developments, the Romanian banking system is undergoing a complex process, where the human dimension of development, the values, the principles and the norms of human rights are important blueprints. After mentioning a number of regulations in this respect, the author refers to the project for the establishment of the Banking Ombudsman in Romania as well as the reasons for such an initiative. He further examines how this institution is regulated for, the way it is organized and the way it functions in various countries, the actors that are involved while mentioning the common principles agreed upon, namely: objectiveness and independence, accessibility, consistency, celerity, courtesy, fairness, clarity and scrupulousness, confidentiality, promptness, the informal nature. Such an institution, with its extrajudicial procedures, is meant to strengthen protection of the banking services consumer and at the same time increase confidence in the banking system.
