Summary/Abstract: Referring to the spiritual dimension of human rights, the author presents and examines the speeches and addresses of Pope John Paul II in the first decade of his pontificate down to the instauration of democratic regimes in Eastern Europe. The analysis points out his contribution to the assertion and promotion of the human dimension of human rights, particularly the right to life, the right to civil and religious freedom, the right to culture and the right to peace. In this respect, Cardinal Cassaroli said: “Promotion of human rights and of the rights of peoples by Pope John Paul II was an encouragement and a strong support to all those who claimed and are claiming respect of human rights before the State and the international organizations”.
