EVOLUTION OF RUSSIAN SECURITY THINKING: THE ROLE OF GEOPOLITICAL FACTORS AND EURASIANISM

Summary/Abstract: Russia had often been invaded by foreign powers throughout the history. Thus Russian people had to live under such powers. Among all was the ruling of Golden Horde which lasted approximately 250 years. As the Mongol/Tartar administration separated Russia from Europe, they paved the way for Russian expansion throughout the Asia soon. Foreign invasions and the lack of natural barriers formed the basis of Russian security thinking. While expanding their lands along the upper side of the continent, Russians had eliminated any powers which might have posed threat in the future. Russian security thinking had been shaped by geopolitical concerns. So geopolitical theories were applied to the evolution of Russian security thinking. The geopolitical understanding which led to the Russian expansion embodied in the Eurasianist thinking. Contemporary followers of Eurasianists who regard Russia as an Eurasianist power, view post-Soviet space as the “Near Abroad” and primary area of interest of Russia. In this paper, evolution of Russian security thinking has been studied in view of geopolitical factors and Eurasianism.
