Summary/Abstract: The central problem of political economy is the relationship between authority structure and ownership relations. Nowhere is that relationship of greater concern to policymakers , or of greater interest to social scientists , than in Eastern Europe, where post-communist governments are grappling with the monumental task of privatization. Is it possible for countries undergoing transitions from authoritarianism to multiparty democracy to undertake radical reforms of ownership relations?
