Summary/Abstract: Seventeen years after the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted, violence against children still remains a worldwide problem, which ought to be solved as soon as possible. Even though known for a long time, the existence of bad treatments of various types, the seriousness and the omnipresence of this phenomenon have been acknowledged relatively recently. The author presents the types of violence against children, their spreading and the risk factors. She also presents the conclusions and the recommendations to be found in the UN Report of 2006 on violence against children and in other documents issued by the world organization and its institutions as well as in publications in the field. Special attention is paid to similar preoccupations at European level, particularly to the proposed convention that should provide global and effective protection for children against any forms of violence, exploitation and abuse as well as the project of a European model of a law transposing the provisions of the treaty and applicable to all the Member States of the Council of Europe.
