Summary/Abstract: In this article six novels by the Swiss writer Margrit Schriber are discussed in relation to self-determination. Each of the main female protaganists becomes aware of the extent to which social structures and attitudes determine her life. This perception gives rise to an attempt to confront the concrete impediments of daily life so as to develop strategies which would liberate her from these constrictions and enable possible self-determination. These endeavours take place against the background of a very precisely delineated Switzerland in the 1970s and 1980s and have general validity for the position of women at that time.
