Summary/Abstract: Many interesting ideas have been proposed at this conference about how the Western scholarly community, and ACLS within it, could help the process of change and renewal in East Central Europe in the field of scientific research and higher education. Scholarships, exchanges of students and scholars, research grants, counseling, setting up of international chairs and creating "islands of excellence" in East Central Europe, publication projects, curbing the brain drain, and many other possibilities and tasks that could and should be done have been discussed. Help and cooperation have already been organized in all these fields, though they could be developed further. There are certain fields, however, where it is much more difficult to help; where funds, expertise, and good will are not enough to solve the problems. Let me mention two of these fields. [...]
