Summary/Abstract: Racial profiling is a new name for an old practice, denoting discrimination based on race with the activity of the police, as well as with the various stages of the criminal justice, based on the false assumption that the great majority of crimes are committed by racial minorities. Racial profiling is a serious violation of human rights, in the first place of the rights to non-discrimination, to equality before the law, to the presumption of innocence, the right to the freedom and security of persons, and may affect many other rights, including the economic, social and cultural ones. After a presentation and an analysis of the provisions in the international treaties applicable to this phenomenon, the respective treaty bodies and the way they function, the author points out the fact that, in order to fight racial profiling, there is need for specific strategies and measures at the level of the States Parties, optimization of the control mechanisms and procedures, as well as codes of conduct adopted by the professionals in the police forces and the administration of justice in general.
