Summary/Abstract: For the thought of the Catholic Church to be understood, it often happens that it should be placed in a certain historical context. Starting from this idea, the author makes a historical review, from the Greek philosophy to Christianity, Enlightenment down to contemporary epoch, all in the context of adaptation to the new requirements of society, democracy and human rights. The question the author asks is whether those steady criteria, characteristic of democracy, have been defined at present, and the thought of the Church is part of the systems as a component element of society as a whole. Bearing all these in mind, he deems that the voice of the Church should not be restricted to the private area, but he and everywhere to counteract ethic relativism and hedonism and defend, by means of its teachings, the fundamental principles and values defining the human beings.
