The Pharmacy profession over time

Summary/Abstract: Pharmacy, as a profession, has been subjected to various changes through time. The purpose of this paper is to present the evolution of the profession from ancient time to the present. The paper is structured in four major chapters. The first chapter presents the practice of pharmacy performed as an integrated part of other professions such as doctors, priests, naturalists, chemists, merchants. The second chapter deals with the terms of pharmacy doctor or pharmacy priest, which refers to doctors or priests specialised only on pharmacy practice. They performed the practice of pharmacy in a laboratory setting. In the third chapter presents the situation of pharmacy practice in time in Romania. The last chapter tries to depict the new role of the pharmacist in the XXI century. The pharmacist becomes specialised in various fields and the number of pharmacy practicians is continuously increasing. By studying the past we manage to predict our future. We established that in Romania the profile of the XXI century pharmacist has not been yet defined but by analysing the past, we are sure that these changes will take place. It remains the question when it will happen.
