Why was logic necessary for medieval theologicians? The case of Anselm

Summary/Abstract: The venerable story that the medieval theologians rejected the application of dialectical reasoning to Christian doctrine needs rewriting. What they reject is the misapplication of logic to theology. There are many postures that medieval theologians use logic for the problems that must be investigated and resolved in Sacred Scripture. I concentrate here on Anselm of Canterbury, who made considerable use of categories, syllogistics, topics, and modalities in his theological writings. Anselm’s method of using logical techniques in theology set the tone for the enterprises that were to follow.
