Summary/Abstract: The paper refers to the Karpen voltaic pile under two aspects, however related one another: the one of the technical feasibility of the discovery and the one of the social conditioning of its wide application. The Karpen voltaic pile – as other revolu tionary recent discoveries (the paper appoints only one, created in Romania) – is a fruitful example not only for the epistemology of the practice of discoveries, but also for the sociology of the scientific knowledge and, obviously, for the sociology of the wide application of scientific discoveries. From all these standpoints, the conclusion of the interference between the act of scientific creation and the social process is inherent.
