Summary/Abstract: The European Union is particularly careful with the protection of health, in an effort to ensure every citizen’s security and economic welfare. At the same time, it promotes the consumers’ rights to information and education, as well as the necessary measures to help them protect their interests. The new legislation enshrines higher standards of security, safety and health, harmonized at the level of the European Union, meant to strengthen the protection of the consumers. Thus, the “EEC’s Preliminary Programme for a consumer protection and information policy” focused on the protection of five of their basic rights: the right to protection of health, the right to protection of economic interests, the right to information and education, the right to redress, and the right of representation at Community and national levels. The introduction of common minimal standards for the safety of the products, the common rules on remote selling, product labelling, and selling by means of salespersons are meant to assure the consumers that they get safe, high quality products and may enjoy services under unambiguous conditions in whatever EU country, since it is common knowledge that commodities can circulate freely within the unique market. There are a large number of directives, regulations, resolutions and recommendations in this respect. Romania also has its legislation, adapted to the European one, for the protection of the consumers’ economic interests. This legislation, including laws, Government ordinances and decisions, etc., has the main purpose to create the necessary framework for the activity of tradesmen and financial institutions while at the same time protecting the consumers and giving them the opportunity to choose from among several similar products, in accordance with everyone’s needs and possibilities.
