Summary/Abstract: The article shows that, during the period comprised between the middle of the XIX-th century – the beginning of the XX-th, the state actively supported the charity initiative and encouraged active philanthropists in every way. The government offered to the Bessarabian aristocrats involved in charitable causes: gratitude, ranks, medals, orders. The state awards had a strong motivational effect and stimulated further charity activities.
