Summary/Abstract: The text argues on some thoughts giving a significance to the concept of functional competence as an element of the communicative competence of the personality. Proposed is author’s theoretical model, that places in a hierarchical sequence the skills and the competences that allow students to apply knowledge and experience acquired in school in a variety of situations that deal with specific real-life problems. The aim is this model to become a base for forming of methodological activities for improving the functional competencies of students in Bulgarian language classes. Proposed is a test in which are formulated reading tasks for a specific source of information. Students improve their skills in finding, processing and using information in solving communicative tasks.
