Summary/Abstract: The immediate picture of the times in 1989 was Francis Fukuyama’s well known article The End of History. It was, in a way, a philosophic declaration of the victorious party of the Cold War. Rather than the end, there was the rebirth of history . This rebirth has shown itself in the power of nationalism. The collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia as well as the break-up of Czechoslovakia were caused or at least accelerated in large part by nationalism. For the first time since 1945 a major European war broke out in the Balkans largely caused by nationalism. There are historical reasons behind the inclination to nationalism in Europe.
