Summary/Abstract: My research is aimed at understanding how attention coupled with long-term, intense experience can be triggered by a specific media content. I have examined the tools used by different media providers to create and maintain a flow experience in the viewer. According to my approach, these tools have a common denominator, the mediaflow – a term defined by me –, which acts as a framework: the term is strongly related to the concept of flow defined by Raymond Williams and described by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi. In order to study the phenomenon, I worked for three years on building a theoretical background and associated methodology. Its validity was established through the comparative analysis of the common features used in the programming strategies of a commercial channel and in the structure of Netflix’s three major contents and its online platform.
