Summary/Abstract: This paper is focused on developments and problems in three social sciences in which the author has some experience, namely sociology, economics, and demography. These sciences are practiced in universities and in research institutes, among which are the institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. To understand developments in these fields, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the stratum of professionals or, as they are sometimes called in Eastern Europe, intellectuals, and to understand this stratum a brief look at general political, economic, social, and cultural developments in Hungary is needed, all in historical perspective.
