Summary/Abstract: The development of social sciences in Albania has a much shorter history than in any other European country, including other former Communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe. To explain this, one should consider a number of historical factors that for many centuries have determined the sociopolitical development of this small country. Successive foreign occupations, particularly the five centuries under Ottoman rule, which lasted until 1912 , drastically inhibited the normal development of Albanian society. Until the end of the nineteenth century, Albania had no native-language elementary schools. Though Albanian is one of the most ancient languages in the Balkans and in Europe, the oldest written documents date only from the fifteenth century. [...]
