Summary/Abstract: The article provides a paleodemographic analysis of the Blokhino village population of the Saransk Uyezd of the Penza province, which was founded in the second half of the 17th century. Blokhino-1 necropolis functioned during the 17th—18th centuries. Saransk, near which the village was located, served as a border town in the 17th century (Atemarskaya zasechnaya line). The first inhabitants of the Saransk fortress were Cossacks, archers and gunners, transferred to it from nearby cities, as well as the population of nearby villages.Average life expectancy of the village of Blokhino population in the 17th—18th centuries. was very low due to very high infant mortality. Moreover, most of the children died in the first year of life.Paleodemographic situation in the village of Blokhino was extremely dysfunctional in the 17th—18th centuries. Further history of the revival and development of the village population was most likely associated with the influx of new residents here from other regions of Russia, which could be explained for a certain time by the important strategic function of this locality as a border settlement on the southeastern border of Russia.
