Summary/Abstract: Every schoolchild goes through several developmental stages and the phenomenon of adaptation to school requirements but adaptation in Form 5 is the most demanding. Schoolchildren meet social and personal difficulties beginning their studies in Form 5. This adaptation also causes anxiety for the parents. The objectives of this research: • to identify the adaptation peculiarities of fifth formers from Marijampolė secondary schools • to review the psychological and pedagogical literature; • to carry out a survey; • to interpret qualitative and quantitative data of the research. The research was carried out in December, 2006. The research sample – 1059 respondents: 607 schoolchildren and 452 parents from 10 Marijampolė secondary schools. The results revealed that in order to ease schoolchildren’s adaptation a number of issues should be highlighted. Schoolchildren are eager to make new friendships but they dislike difficulties in learning and might be discouraged by unfriendly peers. A big amount of homework intimidates schoolchildren. Homework done, the teachers’ appraisal, clear explanations in the class and a schoolchild’s physical well-being are preconditions for successful learning and gaining knowledge in Form 5. Several factors precondition bad results in learning: • bad relations with friends, • lack of time to do homework, • intimidation of the teachers and even the parents. The majority of the respondents claimed that their achievements at school were either good or average meanwhile newcomers evaluated them as bad. The lower are the learning results, the more exhausted by the lessons children feel. Adaptation is influenced by both physical and psychological state. The parents learn about their children’s success or failure at school from the children. The parents are provided with this information at the meetings with the form teacher but communication with the subject teachers is unpopular with the parents. The majority of the surveyed fifth formers are not intimidated by the teachers and feel well in the class. Children’s self-esteem is based on confidence and adaptation to a new situation. Bullying enhances children’s dissatisfaction with peer relations at school.
