Summary/Abstract: Hungary's political system has undergone a profound change over the last couple of years. A Communist dictatorship has collapsed and the institutional conditions of a democratic political system have emerged, a turn certainly not without antecedents . The process of "pettyembourgeoisement" during the Kadar period produced a collective mindset among most Hungarians that is utterly different from traditional Communist culture, and transformed the matrix of interests and the economic structure of society. The Hungarian democratic opposition had had a decade-long tradition of clandestine political struggle, reform-Communists had weakened party state ideology from within, and the slow and gradual appearance of a group of writers as political actors seeking to re-create a populist-nationalist system of values could also be clearly detected.
