Summary/Abstract: Globalization, processes of European integration, Lithuanian society’s wish to provide high quality education challenge teacher training. A precondition for changes in education and taking into consideration biological, cultural and value aspects as well as the knowledge about the dominating teacher training models in the Europe Union countries was the value of training more universal specialists. Long-lasting teacher training traditions are continued in the Faculty of Education and Social Work of Marijampolė College. This empirical research on the teachers of religious education qualification revealed that the College authorities are not satisfied with the competences gained by former specialists. Demands for modern teacher training, attitudes of the Catholic Church outlined in its documents and the results of an empirical research on the specialists’ qualification served as a precondition developing standards for the training programs of two specialties teachers, thus defining activity spheres and competences of the future teachers of the Lithuanian language and religious education in basic school.
