Summary/Abstract: The birth of capitalism in Eastern Europe is a unique historical process. Two of the general features that distinguish it from the first birth in Western Europe are the speed and the comprehensiveness of the transformation process. In contrast to earlier transitions in which the foundations of a market economy, a parliamentary democracy, and a pluralistic civil society evolved in several stages over an extended period of time, post-Communist societies are facing "the triple transition" simultaneously.
