Summary/Abstract: On October 27, 1991 , Poland held its first genuinely free national parliamentary elections since 1922. It may be recalled that the parliamentary elections of 1928 were conducted two years after the Pitsudski coup d'etat, and were regarded by those opposed to the regime of Marshal Pitsudski as substantially "tainted" at least. In 1935, Poland had adopted a new constitutional and electoral system that effectively removed political parties from parliamentary representation. All the elections and referenda held under Communist rule from 1946 onward were variously falsified and coerced. [...]
