Summary/Abstract: According to a long-standing attitude of trust in the pictorial power of words, writing has always been regarded as painting with words. But is this a mere metaphor or something more than that and what is the contribution of fine arts to the visual impression of the literary work? How does the pictorial paradigm enrich writing and, in their turn, how do verbal pictures enrich reading? In general, can a text make us “see“ and what do we “see“ when we read? It will be interesting to trace the role of the pictorial motif in the Bulgarian literary imagination. And even though there are no works in Bulgarian literature such as The Unknown Masterpiece by Balzac, or The Oval Portrait by E. Poe, or The Portrait of Dorian Gray by O. Wilde, there is no lack of artistic writing and one can easily detect a number of cases in artistic practice where the two arts intertwine.
