Summary/Abstract: In a paraphrase of the opening sentence of the novel Anna Karenina, Jacques Rupnik in 1988 commented that all regimes of the "brighter future" have political systems that are alike, but that each of these societies is unhappy in its own peculiar way with its own peculiar experience of totalitarianism. These "brighter future" regimes are the real socialisms of Eastern and Central Europe.
