Summary/Abstract: Forty hadith collections are a very common phenomenon within the Islamic cultural heritage. There is rarely an Islamic scholar of some significance who has not composed one such collection. The authors found the incentive for their writing in hadiths which promise a hereafter prize to everyone who will preserve forty hadiths for the Islamic umma. These collections are most often thematic and with cited hadiths from a certain field. Mulla Abd al-Rahman Jami, who is one of the most prominent Persian poets, scholars and Sufis from the fifteenth century, also wrote one such a collection which bears the title Chehel Kaleme (Forty Sayings), in which hadiths pertaining to Islamic ethics were cited. After citing each hadith, Jami composed verses in which he meditates about its meaning by which this work is accounted among the most significant poetic works of Jami.
