Summary/Abstract: Th e author explores the diff erent dimensions of the minority-related forms of autonomy. In fact, he analyzes the advantages and the harmful eff ects of the territorial and cultural autonomy, too. Emphasizing the dynamic interplay, a triangular relationship amongst the national minorities, the “nationalizing states” in which they live, and the external homeland to which they belong, he off ers a frame that is sensitive to the historical contingencies. In accordance with the author there is no abstract answer in relation to the alternative emphasized in the title of this article (cultural or territorial). Actually, the concrete answer is dependent on the following dimensions: relations between the majority and minority elites, socio-economic situation in the given country, the capacity of the government to deal with the confl icts, the institutionalization of the relations between majorities and minorities.
